Cambodia celebrates 30 years of Victory Day of Genocide

On the morning of January 7th at the Olimpic National Stadium in Phnom Penh, the 30th anniversary of the victory of Pol Pot taked place, the liberation of Cambodian people from the genocide disaster (7.1.1979 - 7.1.2009) organized by the Royal Government and the Cambodian People's Party (CPP). This is one of important and interesting events during 10 days itinerary Cambodia.

Participants were CPP Chair, Chea Sim Senate President, Hun Sen Prime Minister, Heng Samrin National Assembly Chairman, with representatives of diplomatic missions and many international organizations. Vietnam's Ambassador to Cambodia Nguyen Chien Thang attended.

Speaking to 50,000 people, Chea Sim confirmed that  the victory on January 7th in 1979 closed the Cambodia's darkest history, opening up a period of independence, peace, freedom, democracy and progress for country.

On this occasion, on behalf of Cambodian people, Chea Sim expressed his deepest thanks to the Party, Government and people of Vietnam for their generous and sincere assistance to the Cambodian people in the cause of their destruction the regime of genocide and development of the country. The President also expressed his gratitude to the sacrifice of the volunteer army in Vietnam for the liberation of the Cambodian people and to send deep gratitude to the families of Vietnamese volunteer martyrs.

According to statistics from the National Monopoly Front for Cambodia, more than two million people were killed under the Khmer Rouge regime, with an estimated 1.7 million people brutally killed in "dead fields." Nearly 6000 schools, 700 hospitals and medical facilities, nearly 2000 temples, more than 100 churches were destroyed or turned into innocent detainees. With the help of Vietnamese volunteer, Cambodian people have stepped up to overthrow the brutal Khmer Rouge regime. After three decades of efforts to build the country, Cambodian GDP is $8.4 billion, averaging $589 by person a year.

Prior to this, many celebratory activities were also held in the provinces of Svay Rieng, Battambang and Kompong Cham.
